New Record!
Yelkouan Shearwater Project – Turkey proudly presents its new record!
In the course of Bosphorus Coastal Count Marathon the team counted 90 thousands* of Yelkouan Shearwaters in 4 hours in 5th February 2014. After the 73 thousands record which was counted in 4th February 2012, this new count equals the maximum value of estimated population in the Mediterranean Basin. With this 3rd record-breaking count, we also proved that the Bosphorus is the best place to see this huge movement of Yelkouans which takes place in the first week of February each year.
More surveys will be conducted in coming years to confirm the population estimates of this threatened seabird species.
*Total of birds flying one direction –towards south. All birds flying to north is excluded.
