Objectives

Yelkouan shearwater Puffinus yelkouan is listed on the Annex I of the European Commission’s Birds Directive and has recently been upgraded on the IUCN Red List to “Vulnerable”. Turkish seas and especially Turkish Straits System hold internationally important number of Yelkouan Shearwaters.

The ultimate goal of the Yelkouan Shearwater Project -Turkey is to ensure the survival of global population of threatened Yelkouan shearwater by contributing to ongoing research in the Mediterranean Basin.

The objectives of Yelkouan Seharwater Project Turkey are;

  • Monitoring the movement and number of Yelkouans passing Turkish Strait System with long term systematic coastal counts
  • Revealing the breeding status of the species in Turkey
  • Identifying at-sea threats and the extent of by-catch for Yelkouans in Turkish seas
  • Initiating long-term monitoring programme for seabird by-catch in Turkey
